in the book “The 5 Essential People Skills” Dale Carnegie suggests five basic interpersonal skills we need to assert ourselves, listen to other and resolve conflicts. Dale Carnegie is famous for his classic book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”
One issue new leaders or managers may face is shyness and lack of assertiveness. But you can learn deliberate tactics for handling other people. Being assertive just means you tell people about how you feel and what really matters to you. State any grievances, opinions, needs or feelings clearly in a non emotional way. Get in touch with your true feelings. You should also show interest in people by asking them questions to draw them out. Listen to their answers. This “assertive curiosity’ is extremely important as a leader or manager. It helps you build rapport and makes people feel good about you. Remember to ask smart questions so plan about what you will say.
Don’t ever be stressed or brag in front of your staff, and always make certain you can explain how others can also benefit from your ideas. Never try to win where someone else loses, always strive for “win-win”. Assertiveness is not aggressiveness. Plan out your interaction. Building self-confidence and assertiveness is a lot easier than you may believe.
Aggressive people often act as bullies because of their own insecurities. Cite facts to keep bullies quite but prepare first. Counter their come backs with “What is your evidence?”
